Ecological Genomics of American Eel (Anguilla rostrata) and Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis)

Louis Bernatchez (Director)
Céline Audet (Co-director)

I am interested in the ecology and evolution of genes, gene networks and genomes in natural populations.

I joined the Bernatchez Lab in Dec, 2010 and I will remain until April, 2014. In my recently finished PhD, I studied the evolution and ecology of sockeye salmon in southwest Alaska. I compared body shape, genetic diversity and transcriptomes in ecologically diverse populations. Some populations are recently colonized and I reported the most recent ecological divergence following natural colonization in a fish species.

In addition to developing novel techniques for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), as well as participating in the development of a bioinformatics course, my current projects involve two species, American eel and lake whitefish:

American eel:

  • Conducting a full genome sequencing project.
  • Coordinating genomic, transcriptomic, life history, habitat choice, and contaminant aspects of overlapping and integrated American eel experiments.
  • Supervising the artificial rearing of American eel individuals of different developmental stages and life histories.
  • Lake whitefish:

  • Conducting a full genome sequencing project of lake whitefish, including full transcriptome of ten different tissue types.
  • Conducting a study relating MHC genetic diversity to parasites among individuals and populations of lake whitefish.
